Whew! No dudu in my hair….No, it’s not what you think! Dudu means insect in Swahili! And now that the little dudus have returned, so have their predators, the scorpion. This is a young one – the adults grow to be 4 inches long.
The other night as I was walking into the bedroom tent, a fully grown one dropped on my head, scratching my forehead as it fell to the floor Thankfully, the weight of the little beast is what made it fall rather than getting stuck in my hair. Still, a bit creepy!

WHAT’S A GUY GOTTA DO TO GET A GIRL?The Yellow Weaver Bird loves to nest around people, and they often have colonies of several hundred all building their nests in one tree. We have just such a colony outside our workshop. The noise is deafening as the males dance and shout, trying to entice the females to take a look at the lovely nest they’ve built. Here is a close up of the nest showing the entrance that hangs down. In the upper right corner, you can see how the males begin to build a nest starting with a loop of grasses. It only takes them just a few days to build a nest. Sometimes they or the unimpressed females drop a nest to the ground, and a male starts all over again. A lot hinges on him getting it just right! |
